Photohispana Group was created around 2004/05 by veteran photographer and journalist Maria Elena Esquivel, former Associated Press photographer (7 years) and owner of Photohispana Studio & School which has been based in the heart of the Nations Capital since 1990.

A small group of her photography students wanted to practice with real models in a real studio and soon, she included a few professionals.

The group grew so fast that now, 6 years later, the group has 81 members from Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland areas been the largest and most multicultural photography club in Washington DC.

Maria Elena Esquivel

Maria Esquivel is a Costa Rican born photojournalist.

She attended Journalism School in 1975 and Fine Arts in 1977 at Universidad de Costa Rica.

Along with her studies in media and fine arts, she also studied English as a second language, photography and crafts.

In 1989 she travelled to the United States as a special correspondent to THE WHITE HOUSE and the US SENATE for "La Nacion," the main daily newspaper in Costa Rica.

During her 15 years in the news she covered the wars of Nicaragua and El Salvador, working for the Associated Press while having her photos in some of the most important newspapers and magazines around the world including the New York Times, Newsweek, Miami Herald, UsNews & World Report, Forbes and the Washington Post, among others.

From 1989 to 1999 she worked for Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) based in Washington DC  http://www.cspinet.org/ as a food & products photographer. In 1997 CSPI's Nutrition Action Newsletter becomes the largest-circulation health newsletter in North America, bringing life-saving information to more than two million Americans and Canadians. 

She published a photo of Dr.Michael Jacobson, director of the CSPI in PlayBoy Magazine, to illustrate an important article about nutrition.


Since 2000 she manages her own business studio in Washington and is back into teaching fine art traditional and digital photography.
