Maria Elena Esquivel is a Costa Rican born photographer and journalist.

She attended Journalism School in 1975 and Fine Arts in 1977 at Universidad de Costa Rica. Along with her studies in media and arts, she also studied English as a second language, photography and crafts. In 1989 she traveled to the United States as a special correspondent to for La Nacion, the main daily newspaper in Costa Rica.

During her more than 20 years in the news she covered the wars of Nicaragua and El Salvador, working for the only English language publication in Costa Rica, The Tico Times (8 years), and for the Associated Press while having her photos published in some of the most important newspapers and magazines around the world including the New York Times, Newsweek, Miami Herald, Us News & World Report, Forbes Magazine, Bangor Daily News, Christian Science Monitor, Playboy Magazine, USA Today, Peperdine Univ.Mag., De Standaard (Belgium), Dagblad(Dutch newspaper)and the Washington Post, among many others.

From 1989 to 1999 she worked for Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) based in Washington DC  http://www.cspinet.org/ as a food & products photographer. In 1997 CSPI's Nutrition Action Newsletter becomes the largest-circulation health newsletter in North America, bringing life-saving information to more than two million Americans and Canadians.

Since 2000 she manages her own business-studio in Washington DC, teaching fine art traditional and digital photography.

             Photohispana since 1990
Photohispana Group was created around 2004/05 by veteran photographer and journalist Maria Elena Esquivel, former Associated Press photographer and CEO of Photohispana Studio & School which has been based in the heart of the Nations Capital since 1990.

A small group of her photography students wanted to practice with real models in a real studio and soon, she included a few professionals.

The group grew so fast that now, 9 years later, it has hundreds of members from Washington DC, Maryland areas and is the largest and oldest photography club in Washington DC.


We have started a new exhiting group in Denver Colorado since Feb.2014 with monthly shoots.By the summer 2014 we'll start doing fashion-modeling shoots twice a month.We welcome all enthusiastic artist in the Denver areas to join us!
